How You Will Know He is The One

With Valentine's Day coming up, I can feel all my girlfriends flitting and flurrying around.
"I've got to find a guy to take me out!" They loudly whisper.
There is some advice I always give my single friends...

Now, I will say this-- I still get butterflies when I don't see my husband for awhile, but these aren't magical butterflies. These are the type that had to burst out of their chrysalis. They weren't the type to happen just because, or all the time in the beginning. Love should be slow burning, and should also be built up slowly.
In my relationship with my husband, there are stark differences between the beginning of our love, and the past long term relationships I had been in.
It took me 21 years to figure out that that difference was that was missing all along.
Wanna know the secret?
Our relationship has never been been about jealousy.

I knew Spencer was the right guy for me within two weeks of talking. Even crazier?
We had only talked on the phone. He was living in Georgia for the Summer, while I was back in Utah.
Our relationship was based on phone calls and skype sessions-- some even last 10 hours (I kid you not!). The first time we kissed was right after he picked me up from the airport 3 months into the "talking via airwaves" thing.
Crazy story aside, I didn't feel jealous once. Not when he went out with his guys. Not when he didn't text back for hours. This relationship trumped all the rest because for once I didn't have to worry. The best way to describe the beginning of our relationship is the feeling of content.

So my advice for single girls waiting around for Prince Charming? Don't confuse others acting like Prince Charming to be your Prince Charming. If you have to question him, look at his phone, sit up worrying at night, or feel inadequate. He isn't right. & for the record, if you can't carry on a conversation without trying to change who you are, he isn't right either. When Prince Charming shows up on your doorstep, you will know. You will know more than you ever thought you "knew" before because everything will fit together just right.

  1. Such good advice. My husband and I have been together since high school (12 years now) and I'd say this sentiment rings very true in our relationship as well. We don't get jealous when the other has commitments that don't involve us (in fact, we encourage it because it's healthy to do things solo sometimes) and there's an underlying trust to our relationship that trumps everything else. Thanks so much for sharing...this is the kind of Valentine's Day post I love to read!!

    1. Ah! That is amazing! I love hearing about high school sweethearts. I am glad that my advice sounds right, since I am no expert. I completely agree, doing things solo is absolutely necessary!

  2. Great advice...listen to your gut!! I dated someone off and on for four yrs and was determined to marry him...despite that little voice telling me it was a bad idea. Luckily I didn't....I knew on the first date with my husband that he was the one! We have been married 17 yrs!

    1. That can be the toughest situation-- I have been there too! Sometimes you just have to realize that as happy (and angry) as they make you, someone will make you happier!

  5. I knew I wanted my husband in my life forever, after dating for 6 months. I followed my gut and my heart. We have been married for 3 years and thus far it has been the best 3 years of my life.
